What is STANDARDIZE function in Excel?

STANDARDIZE function is one of Statistical functions in Microsoft Excel that returns a normalized value from a distribution characterized by mean and standard_dev.

Syntax of STANDARDIZE function

STANDARDIZE(x, mean, standard_dev)

The STANDARDIZE function syntax has the following arguments:

  • X: The value you want to normalize.
  • Mean: The arithmetic mean of the distribution.
  • Standard_dev: The standard deviation of the distribution.

Explanation of STANDARDIZE function

  • If standard_dev ≤ 0, STANDARDIZE returns the #NUM! error value.
  • The equation for the normalized value is:Equation

Example of STANDARDIZE function

Steps to follow:

1. Open a new Excel worksheet.

2. Copy data in the following table below and paste it in cell A1

Note: For formulas to show results, select them, press F2 key on your keyboard and then press Enter.

You can adjust the column widths to see all the data, if need be.

Data Description
42 Value to normalize.
40 Arithmetic mean of the distribution.
1.5 Standard deviation of the distribution.
Formula Description Result
=STANDARDIZE(A2,A3,A4) Normalized value of 42, using 40 as the arithmetic mean and 1.5 as the standard deviation. 1.33333333
